A dog found a big, tasty bone. 'What a lucky day!' he thought. He held it in his mouth and ran to enjoy it in a quiet place.
On the way, he crossed a small wooden bridge over a stream. He looked down into the clear water.
There he saw another dog â holding another bone! (It was only his own reflection, but he did not know.)
'That dog's bone looks bigger than mine,' he thought greedily. 'I will scare him and grab it!'
He opened his mouth to bark â 'WOOF!' â and the moment he opened it, his own bone fell into the stream. Splash! Gone.
The water shook, the 'other dog' disappeared, and the poor dog stood on the bridge with nothing at all.
He had a whole bone. He wanted two. He got zero.
