A hungry jackal wandered into a town at night, looking for food. Some dogs chased him, and he ran and fell — splash! — into a big tub of blue dye.
When he came out, he was completely blue from nose to tail! No animal had ever seen such a creature.
Back in the forest, everyone was amazed. 'What is this shining blue animal?' Even the lions and tigers were confused.
The clever jackal saw his chance. He said grandly, 'The gods have sent me to be your king!' All the animals believed him and bowed. The blue jackal lived like a king — best food, best seat, servants everywhere.
But one full-moon night, far away, a pack of jackals began to howl. Hooowwwl!
The blue king's ears stood up. His heart danced. He forgot everything — and he threw back his head and howled with them! HOOOWWWL!
The animals froze. 'A jackal! Our king is just a jackal in blue colour!' The blue jackal ran from the forest, and no paint could ever help him again.
