All summer, a grasshopper sang and danced in the sunshine. 'What a lovely life!' he chirped.
Nearby, a little ant worked all day. She carried grains, one by one, to her home. Up and down, up and down, without rest.
The grasshopper laughed at her. 'Why work so hard, friend? The sun is out! Come and dance with me!'
The ant smiled. 'I am saving food for the winter. You should too.' 'Winter is far away!' sang the grasshopper, and he danced on.
Then winter came. Snow covered the ground. There was no food anywhere. The grasshopper, cold and hungry, came to the ant's door.
The kind ant shared her food and her warm home. The grasshopper ate quietly and said, 'You danced less in summer — but you can eat in winter. Next summer, I will work first and sing after.'
And from that year on, he did.
