An old farmer had four sons. They were strong boys — but they fought with each other every single day.
The worried father thought of a way to teach them. He called them and put a bundle of sticks, tied together, in front of them.
'Whoever breaks this bundle wins a prize,' he said.
The eldest tried first. He bent it with all his power. It did not break. The second tried, then the third, then the fourth. The bundle would not break.
Then the father untied the bundle and gave each son just one stick. 'Now try.'
Crack! Crack! Crack! Crack! Every single stick broke easily.
The father said softly, 'My sons, you are like these sticks. If you stay together, no trouble can break you. If you fight and stand alone, life will break you one by one.' The four brothers never forgot it.
