The Temple

On the banks of the holy Godavari stands Bhadrachalam, the great Rama temple of the Telugu land. The main temple was built around 1674 by Kancherla Gopanna — a tahsildar (revenue officer) under the Golconda Sultanate, remembered forever as Bhakta Ramadasu, one of Rama's greatest devotees.

The Legend of Ramadasu

Gopanna used tax money from the treasury to build this temple for Rama — without permission. The Sultan, Tana Shah, put him in prison at Golconda, where he suffered for years, singing heart-breaking songs to Rama that Telugu people still sing today. Then, the beloved tradition says, two mysterious youths — Rama and Lakshmana themselves — appeared before the Sultan at night, repaid the full amount in gold coins, and vanished. The stunned Sultan freed Ramadasu with honour. Some of those 'Rama coins' are shown at the temple even today. Tradition also tells that Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana spent part of their forest exile at nearby Parnasala.

Good to Know

The grandest day here is Sri Rama Navami, when the divine wedding of Rama and Sita — the Sitarama Kalyanam — is performed before lakhs of devotees. Following a tradition from the Nizam era, pearls are offered for the wedding on behalf of the state government — a custom of respect continuing across faiths to this day.
