After a big storm, thousands of starfish were washed up on a long beach. They lay on the hot sand, slowly dying without water.
An old man walking on the beach saw a young girl. She was picking up starfish, one at a time, and gently throwing them back into the sea.
The man laughed kindly. 'Child, look at this beach! There are thousands of them. You cannot save them all. What difference can you make?'
The girl listened quietly. Then she bent down, picked up one more starfish, and threw it into the waves.
She looked at the old man and said, 'It made a difference to that one.'
The old man stood silent for a moment. Then he slowly bent down, picked up a starfish, and threw it into the sea too.
Soon, others on the beach joined them. Because that is how change works — never all at once, but always one starfish at a time.
