🏺 The Cracked Pot

← Work & Life Stories

A water carrier had two big pots. He hung them on the two ends of a stick and carried them from the river to his master's house every day.

One pot was perfect. It brought full water every time. The other pot had a small crack. By the time they reached home, it was always half empty.

For two years this happened daily. The perfect pot was proud. The cracked pot was ashamed. One day it said to the man, 'I am sorry. I waste your hard work. Half my water always leaks away. Please replace me.'

The water carrier smiled gently. 'Have you seen the path we walk? Look carefully today.'

That day, the cracked pot noticed something. On its side of the path, there were beautiful flowers — all along the way. The other side was plain dirt.

The man said, 'I always knew about your crack. So I planted flower seeds on your side of the path. Every day, on our way home, you watered them without knowing.'

'For two years, I have picked these flowers for my master's table. Without you being exactly the way you are, there would be no flowers, and no beauty in the house.'
