Born: 19 February 1630, Shivneri Fort | Known for: Swarajya, guerrilla warfare, people-first rule | Famous words: βFreedom is a boon which everyone has the right to receive.β
Early Life
Shivaji was born on 19 February 1630 in the hill fort of Shivneri, Maharashtra. His mother Jijabai raised him on stories of the Ramayana and Mahabharata and a single burning idea: Swarajya β self-rule, a kingdom of the people, in an age when mighty sultanates and the Mughal empire ruled everything. At just 15β16, Shivaji took his first fort, Torna, with a band of young Maval companions from the hills.
The Master of Strategy
Shivaji could not match huge armies head-on, so he rewrote the rules of war. Using lightning speed, surprise, and perfect knowledge of the Sahyadri mountains, his small forces defeated giants β the style now taught worldwide as guerrilla warfare. When the towering general Afzal Khan came to crush him and called him to a meeting-trap, Shivaji arrived prepared with hidden armour and wagh nakh (tiger claws) β and the hunter became the hunted. His escape from Aurangzeb's house arrest in Agra β reportedly hidden in giant sweet baskets β is one of history's great escapes.
The People's King
Crowned Chhatrapati in 1674 at Raigad, Shivaji ruled unlike the kings of his time. Farmers' crops were never to be touched by his armies; women's dignity was protected with iron strictness β even captured enemy women were returned home with honour. He built a navy centuries before others saw its need, earning the title Father of the Indian Navy. His government ran on merit through the Ashta Pradhan (council of eight ministers), and he promoted people of every caste and faith β his most trusted commanders and personal guards included Muslims.
What We Can Learn
- Start where you stand β a teenager with hill forts built an empire against the world's richest rulers.
- Brains beat size: strategy is the great equalizer.
- Power is judged by how it treats the powerless β farmers, women, common people.
