The Temple

High in the Trikuta hills of Jammu sits the holy cave of Mata Vaishno Devi — one of the most visited shrines in India, drawing around a crore of pilgrims a year. The journey itself is the worship: a climb of about 12–13 kilometres from the base town of Katra, which devotees of every age make on foot — many barefoot — chanting 'Jai Mata Di' with every step, day and night, in sun, rain, and snow.

The Legend

Inside the cave, the Mother is present not as an idol but as three natural rock forms — the three pindis — representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati: power, prosperity, and wisdom in one place. Tradition tells of the devout Vaishnavi, who took shelter in these hills, and of the popular belief that the Mother herself calls her devotees — people say you can reach Vaishno Devi only when your 'bulawa' (her call) comes. A visit is traditionally completed with darshan at the Bhairavnath shrine above the cave.

Good to Know

The route is lively through the night — lit, lined with resting points, with ponies, palanquins, and a helicopter service for those who cannot climb. Navaratri is the grandest season, when the whole mountain glows with lights and song.
