The Temple

On the green Nallamala hills, beside the Krishna river, stands Srisailam — one of the rarest holy places in India. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, and Goddess Bhramaramba here is honoured among the Shakti Peethas — making Srisailam one of the very few temples sacred to both Shiva and Shakti at the highest level. Its fort-like walls carry beautiful carvings of stories from the Puranas.

The Legend

The Puranas tell a touching family story. When Ganesha married first, his brother Kartikeya felt hurt and went away to the south. Shiva and Parvati, missing their son, came down and stayed on this hill to be near him — Shiva as Mallikarjuna, Parvati as Bhramaramba. So devotees see Srisailam as the home of divine parents who came looking for their child — a temple born of a parent's love.

Good to Know

Great souls across the centuries have visited — tradition connects Adi Shankaracharya to this temple, where he is said to have composed the Sivananda Lahari. Maha Shivaratri here is grand. The temple sits inside a tiger reserve, and the drive up through the Nallamala forest, with views of the Srisailam dam, is itself unforgettable.
