The Temple

In the heart of the ancient city of Madurai rises one of the most stunning temples ever built — the home of Goddess Meenakshi (a form of Parvati) and Lord Sundareswarar (Shiva). Its fourteen towering gopurams, covered top to bottom with thousands of brightly painted sculptures of gods, saints, and celestial beings, look like mountains of art. Though the temple is ancient, most of its present grandeur was built by the Nayak kings, especially Tirumala Nayaka in the 1600s. Its Hall of Thousand Pillars is a wonder of engineering and sculpture.

The Legend

Meenakshi is that rare, beautiful thing — a temple city where the Goddess is worshipped first. Tradition tells she was born to the Pandya king as a blessed child with fish-shaped eyes ('Meen-akshi' means fish-eyed), grew into a mighty queen who conquered in all directions, and finally met Shiva himself — who came to Madurai as Sundareswarar, 'the beautiful lord,' to marry her. Their divine wedding is re-celebrated every year as Meenakshi Thirukalyanam in the grand Chithirai festival, drawing lakhs of devotees.

Good to Know

Every night, in a tender ritual, the image of Sundareswarar is carried to Meenakshi's chamber to rest — the temple treats the divine couple as living presence. The golden lotus tank, the evening rituals, and the markets of old Madurai around the temple make this a complete pilgrimage of the senses.
